Published to accompany Brueghel: The Family Reunion, presented at Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, this richly illustrated exhibition catalog celebrates the extraordinary legacy of the Brueghel family across five generations of artists.

Bringing together approximately eighty paintings, drawings, and prints from leading European and North American collections, the exhibition marked the first time all five generations of the Brueghel dynasty were presented together under one roof. From Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Mayken Verhulst to Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and later descendants, the catalog traces the artistic development of a family whose influence shaped European painting for more than 150 years.

Rather than presenting the Brueghels as isolated masters, the publication explores the family’s artistic collaborations, workshop practices, patronage, marketing strategies, and international networks. Essays examine how knowledge, techniques, and visual ideas were passed from one generation to the next while highlighting the important role of women, particularly Mayken Verhulst, in preserving and expanding the family’s artistic legacy.

Richly illustrated and supported by new scholarship, Brueghel: The Family Reunion also investigates the family’s remarkable range of subjects, from landscapes, peasant life, and religious scenes to allegories, still lifes, and cabinet paintings. The result is a comprehensive portrait of one of the most successful and influential artistic dynasties of the Renaissance and early Baroque periods.

An essential reference for collectors, scholars, museum visitors, and anyone interested in Old Master painting, Flemish Renaissance art, and the enduring legacy of the Brueghel family.
