Published for the exhibition Raoul Dufy, la mélodie du bonheur (Raoul Dufy: The Melody of Happiness) at Les Franciscaines in Deauville, this richly illustrated catalog presents a major retrospective of French modernist artist Raoul Dufy (1877–1953), organized in partnership with the Centre Pompidou.
The exhibition draws on the remarkable collection of Dufy’s studio works held by the Centre Pompidou. Bequeathed to the French state by the artist’s wife in 1963 and subsequently enriched through donations and acquisitions, the collection comprises more than 1,600 works. For the first time, selections from across this extensive holding are brought together to reveal the extraordinary range of Dufy’s artistic practice.
Paintings are presented alongside drawings, prints, ceramics, textiles, and works in the decorative arts, tracing Dufy’s development across landscape, portraiture, book illustration, and design. Organized into ten thematic sections, the catalog highlights an artist whose distinctive visual language combined brilliant color, fluid line, and an enduring fascination with music, leisure, modern life, and the spectacle of the world around him.
