Giovanni Battista Moroni (1521–1580) is today recognized as one of the most important portraitists of the Italian Renaissance. Working mainly in Bergamo and his native Lombardy, Moroni captured his sitters with an unprecedented naturalism that combined the elegance of Venetian painting with a psychological depth that anticipated later traditions of portraiture. His likenesses of noblemen, merchants, scholars, and clerics are not only masterpieces of observation but also vivid documents of the society of his time. For centuries Moroni’s work was admired by connoisseurs and collectors, from Titian’s contemporaries to modern art historians, and his reputation has steadily grown as one of the defining painters of the Cinquecento.

This substantial volume, Moroni 1521–1580. Il ritratto del suo tempo, edited by Simone Facchinetti and Arturo Galansino, stands as the most comprehensive study of the artist to date. Published by Skira in collaboration with Gallerie d’Italia, it accompanied the major exhibition dedicated to Moroni and brings together an extraordinary selection of his works. The catalog includes over 200 high-quality color reproductions across more than 340 pages, offering readers a visual journey through his career.
