This exhibition catalog presents a comprehensive exploration of the career of Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto (1518/19–1594), one of the most original and innovative masters of the Venetian Renaissance.
The exhibition is the first in France to offer a comprehensive overview of Tintoretto’s entire career. Bringing together approximately forty paintings and works on paper from public and private collections in France, Italy, and beyond, it traces the development of an artist whose extraordinary creative energy transformed Venetian painting in the 16th century.
Working primarily in Venice, Tintoretto developed a highly distinctive visual language characterized by bold compositions, dramatic perspectives, spectacular effects of light, and rapid, expressive brushwork. His art combined the sculptural power of Tuscan drawing, particularly the example of Michelangelo, with the rich coloristic tradition of Venetian painting associated with Titian.
