This richly illustrated exhibition catalog accompanies the first major European retrospective devoted to María Sol Escobar (1930–2016), internationally known as Marisol.

Featuring around 100 works spanning every stage of the artist’s career, the exhibition reintroduces one of the most original voices of postwar American art. Born in Paris to Venezuelan parents and celebrated on the New York art scene of the 1960s, Marisol created vividly painted wooden sculptures that blended Pop Art, Dada, folk art, social satire, and self-portraiture into a highly distinctive artistic language.

Developed through an international collaboration between Kunsthaus Zürich, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and the Marisol Estate at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, the exhibition explores both Marisol’s artistic evolution and her long-overlooked influence on twentieth-century art.

Moving between popular culture and social critique, Marisol’s sculptures address questions of gender, identity, celebrity, consumer culture, and political power with wit, irony, and remarkable originality. Richly illustrated and accompanied by scholarly essays, the catalog also examines the artist’s enduring dialogue with Europe and her renewed relevance for contemporary audiences.

An essential reference for collectors, scholars, and admirers of Marisol, Pop Art, Latin American artists, feminist art, and postwar American art.
