This richly illustrated exhibition catalog offers a new perspective on Paul Klee by bringing his lesser-known late work to the center of the story and examining the profound transformation of his art during the final decade of his life.

Forced to leave Germany following Nazi persecution in 1933, Klee spent his final years in Switzerland amid exile, political upheaval, and serious illness. Rather than presenting this period simply as one of decline, the catalog explores how these experiences sharpened his engagement with vulnerability, social criticism, and resistance to fascism.

Bringing together works from throughout Klee’s career, the publication traces the evolution of his distinctive visual language while giving particular attention to the paintings and drawings of 1933–1940. With 120 illustrations, it places these late works within the broader development of his art and reveals striking continuities between Klee’s earlier experimentation and the increasingly urgent imagery of his final years.

Essays by leading scholars and curators reconsider the significance of Klee’s last decade and show how abstraction, humor, fantasy, and political awareness remained deeply intertwined in his work until the end of his life.
