This richly illustrated museum collection catalog presents 222 works from the permanent collection of the Carmen Thyssen Málaga Museum, offering a broad survey of Spanish painting with particular emphasis on the nineteenth century.
The collection is organized into four major sections: Old Masters; Romantic Landscapes and Costumbrismo; Précieux Style and Naturalism; and Fin-de-Siècle Art. While earlier Spanish painting is represented by selected Old Masters, including Francisco de Zurbarán, the heart of the collection lies in nineteenth-century art, with especially strong holdings of Andalusian painting.
Among the artists represented are Mariano Fortuny, Joaquín Sorolla, Darío de Regoyos, Julio Romero de Torres, and Ignacio Zuloaga, together with numerous painters who illuminate the development and diversity of Spanish art during the period.
Each work is accompanied by scholarly commentary and a specialized bibliography and exhibition history. Contributions by museum directors, curators, university professors, and other specialists provide historical and artistic context, while the catalog also documents recent additions to the museum’s collection.
The English-language edition includes expanded explanations of costumbrista and other genre subjects to provide international readers with additional context on traditions and themes specific to Spanish culture.
