This exhibition catalog explores the career of Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Il Sodoma (1477–1549), one of the most distinctive and unconventional painters of the Italian Renaissance.

The exhibition marks the first major retrospective devoted to Sodoma in almost eighty years and brings particular attention to his early career. Beginning with his artistic formation in Piedmont, the volume follows the painter’s journey to the important commissions of Siena and Rome, tracing the development of the highly personal style that established his place in early 16th-century Italian art.

Through scholarly essays and an extensive selection of illustrations, the catalog examines Sodoma’s remarkable ability to absorb and reinterpret different artistic traditions. His work reveals encounters with the innovations of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Central Italian Renaissance painting, and classical art, while retaining an expressive character distinctly his own.

Featuring more than fifty works in the exhibition, including rarely seen and previously unexhibited pieces from private collections and major public institutions, the project reassesses Sodoma’s artistic development, inventive freedom, and role within Renaissance painting. Alla conquista del Rinascimento presents a complex portrait of an artist who moved between tradition and experimentation and became one of the most fascinating figures of the Italian Cinquecento.
