This scholarly exhibition catalog explores the artistic legacy of the Brueghel dynasty, focusing on the generations of painters who expanded, transformed, and disseminated the family’s distinctive visual language across Europe. Through paintings, drawings, and prints, it examines the emergence of specialized painting genres and the remarkable success of the Brueghel workshops, tracing their influence on Flemish art, collecting practices, and the European art market during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

While Pieter Bruegel the Elder laid the foundations for a new approach to landscape and everyday life, the catalog places particular emphasis on the subsequent generations of the family. His descendants developed and popularized distinct genres, including peasant scenes, landscapes, floral still lifes, and allegorical painting, transforming the Brueghel artistic legacy into a flourishing tradition that reached collectors throughout Europe.

Pieter Brueghel the Younger established a highly successful workshop that reproduced and circulated his father’s celebrated compositions, helping establish the Brueghel name as a recognizable artistic brand. His younger brother, Jan Brueghel the Elder, pursued a different artistic direction, becoming renowned for his meticulously detailed landscapes, flower paintings, and collaborations with leading artists. His international reputation brought him prestigious patrons, including Cardinal Federico Borromeo in Milan, an important collector of Flemish painting.

Beyond the achievements of individual family members, the publication investigates the international circulation of Flemish art, from Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Haarlem to the Habsburg court in Prague and the artistic circles of Milan. It explores the development of workshop production, collecting practices, and the growing demand for specialized painting genres, revealing how the Brueghel dynasty contributed to the transformation of the European art market.

Featuring reproductions of more than 70 paintings, drawings, and prints, together with illustrated essays by leading scholars of early modern European art, this volume offers a detailed examination of Northern Renaissance painting, Flemish genre scenes, landscape painting, and seventeenth-century artistic culture. It is a valuable reference for collectors, art historians, and readers interested in the Brueghel family and the development of European genre painting.
