Master MS, the anonymous yet celebrated master of late Gothic painting in Hungary, remains one of the most fascinating enigmas of European art around 1500. His surviving works display a virtuoso command of narrative detail, color, and expression, earning him a central place in the history of Hungarian painting, despite his identity remaining unknown.

Master MS and His Age, published in conjunction with the exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest (April 9– July 20, 2025), goes far beyond a traditional exhibition catalog. This 380-page volume represents the most comprehensive study ever devoted to the artist. Bringing together the seven surviving panels of his monumental high altarpiece from St Catherine’s Church in Selmecbánya (today Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia), along with related sculptures and comparative works, it reconstructs the artistic and cultural environment of early 16th-century Central Europe.

At its core, however, the catalog is a fundamental scholarly investigation of Master MS’s oeuvre. Leading art historians analyze his paintings in depth, considering stylistic influences, workshop practices, and historical context, while also attempting to answer the tantalizing question of who he really was. Was he a court artist, a cosmopolitan traveler, or a singular innovator rooted in Hungary? Through essays, technical studies, and newly commissioned photography, this volume seeks to bring the elusive figure of Master MS into sharper focus than ever before.
