This exhibition catalog accompanies 1924. Other Surrealisms, presented at Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid, and offers a offers a new perspective on the reception and transformation of surrealism in Spain and Latin America. Rather than revisiting the familiar Paris-centered narrative shaped by André Breton’s manifesto, the volume expands the field to include alternative, parallel, and often overlooked surrealist practices.

The catalog brings together painting, drawing, photography, and archival materials to show how Surrealism developed unevenly across different cultural and geographic contexts. Spain and Latin America play a central role, revealing how local traditions, political realities, and artistic networks shaped distinct surrealist languages that existed alongside, and sometimes in tension with,  the canonical movement.
