The story of the Ter Borch family is one of the most remarkable chapters in Dutch Golden Age art. While Gerard ter Borch the Younger became internationally celebrated as one of the leading painters of the seventeenth century, he was far from the only artistic talent in his family. This richly illustrated exhibition catalog explores an extraordinary creative household in which drawing, painting, and artistic exchange shaped the lives of multiple generations.

Published in conjunction with the exhibition at Museum de Fundatie, the book presents new research into the Ter Borch family workshop and the relationships between its members. Alongside Gerard, readers encounter his talented sister Gesina ter Borch, as well as other family members who actively participated in the artistic culture that flourished within their home. Their drawings, portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes reveal a level of creativity far broader than previously recognized.

The publication draws upon an extensive family archive preserved by Gesina ter Borch and her descendants and later acquired by the Rijksmuseum. This remarkable collection of documents, sketches, and artworks has enabled scholars to reconstruct the history of one of the most gifted artistic families in the Netherlands. Through these materials, the catalog offers fresh insight into artistic education, collaboration, and family life during the Dutch Golden Age.

Featuring 176 pages and approximately 150 color illustrations, this volume brings together works from museums and collections across the Netherlands while highlighting the cultural importance of Zwolle as the family’s home. The result is both an engaging introduction for general readers and a valuable scholarly resource for collectors and enthusiasts of Dutch seventeenth century art.
