This scholarly museum collection catalog examines 95 Dutch and Flemish still lifes from the Old Masters’ Gallery of the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. The second volume in the museum’s collection catalogue series, it offers a broad survey of still-life painting from 1600 to 1800 and reflects the latest research into this important part of the Budapest collection.
The volume encompasses the major subjects of Dutch and Flemish still-life painting, including flower, fruit and banquet pieces, hunting trophies, kitchen and pantry interiors, and depictions of live animals. Featured artists include Jan Fijt, Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Pieter Claesz., Willem Claesz. Heda, Willem Kalf, Abraham van Beijeren, and Willem van Aelst, alongside works by lesser-known masters.
Written primarily by Ildikó Ember, former chief curator of the Old Masters’ Gallery and a specialist in seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish painting, the catalog incorporates decades of scholarly research. Three entries are contributed by still-life specialist Fred G. Meijer.
With its detailed examination of individual works and the development of the genre, this volume serves as both a catalogue of the Budapest museum collection and a valuable reference on Dutch and Flemish still-life painting of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
