This scholarly volume presents sixteen essays exploring the art and careers of Ferdinand Bol (1616–1680) and Govert Flinck (1615–1660), two of the most successful painters to emerge from Rembrandt’s workshop. Both artists established distinguished careers in 17th-century Amsterdam, developing individual styles and competing for prestigious commissions in the flourishing art market of the Dutch Golden Age.
Edited by Stephanie S. Dickey, this independent collection of art historical research brings together contributions from museum curators, academic art historians, and conservation specialists from six countries. Several essays originated at an international conference held in preparation for the exhibition Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck: Rembrandt’s Master Pupils, presented at the Rembrandt House Museum and Amsterdam Museum in Amsterdam from October 13, 2017, to February 18, 2018.
The research examines the artists’ stylistic development, painting techniques, professional networks, and changing reputations, placing their achievements within the broader context of Dutch Baroque painting and 17th-century portraiture.
Individual essays investigate the influence of artistic patronage on Bol and Flinck, the competitive market for portrait commissions, and Flinck’s early career in the Leeuwarden studio of Lambert Jacobsz. Technical studies of individual paintings reveal new information about artistic methods, while research into portrait identities and historical documentation offers fresh perspectives on their subjects and patrons.
The volume also considers the artists’ roles as teachers and their connections to Amsterdam’s intellectual and theatrical circles, revealing a cultural environment in which painting, literature, and performance were closely intertwined.
Combining archival research, technical analysis, and new art historical interpretations, this publication makes a substantial contribution to the study of Rembrandt’s pupils, Dutch Golden Age art, and the artistic culture of 17th-century Amsterdam.
