Few Dutch Golden Age artists enjoyed greater international fame during their lifetimes than Gerard van Honthorst. Celebrated across Europe and known in Italy as Gherardo delle Notti (“Gerard of the Nights”) for his dramatic candlelit scenes, Honthorst was among the most influential painters of the seventeenth century. Yet despite his historical importance, surprisingly few modern publications have attempted to tell the complete story of his life and artistic achievement. This substantial volume helps fill that gap.

Drawing upon archival discoveries, contemporary accounts, and the artist’s surviving correspondence, author Liesbeth M. Helmus reconstructs Honthorst’s remarkable career from his early years in Utrecht to his transformative journey to Rome. There he encountered the revolutionary art of Caravaggio, whose dramatic use of light and shadow profoundly shaped his artistic vision. The book follows Honthorst’s rise to international prominence and examines how he adapted Italian innovations for audiences throughout the Dutch Republic and beyond.

More than a traditional artist biography, this publication offers a broad reassessment of Honthorst’s oeuvre and the cultural environments in which he worked. It explores his success at European courts, his role in the development of Dutch Caravaggism, and his influence on artists across the continent. Richly illustrated and supported by the latest scholarship, the book provides fresh perspectives on works that helped define the visual culture of the seventeenth century.

The significance of this volume is further underscored by the major retrospective opening at Centraal Museum in 2026, the first large-scale exhibition devoted to Honthorst in his native city. Bringing together approximately sixty paintings and thirty drawings from international collections, the exhibition reflects a growing scholarly interest in the artist and highlights the importance of this publication as one of the most comprehensive modern studies currently available.

With 320 pages, this English-language hardcover edition is an essential acquisition for collectors, scholars, and readers interested in Dutch Golden Age painting, Caravaggism, and the artistic exchanges between Italy and Northern Europe.
