Vecchietta is the first comprehensive monograph dedicated to Lorenzo di Pietro (1410–1480), known as Vecchietta, a pivotal figure in the Sienese Renaissance. Painter, sculptor, architect, and goldsmith, Vecchietta’s multifaceted practice offers a unique lens through which to re-evaluate the art of Quattrocento Siena, often overshadowed by Florentine narratives.
Published in conjunction with the exhibition at Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, this volume explores Vecchietta’s innovations in style and technique, his role as a teacher to the next generation of Sienese artists, and his self-aware presentation as both painter and sculptor. Notably, he was among the first Italian artists to paint an independent self-portrait and to design his own funerary chapel.
Author Giulio Dalvit, Associate Curator at The Frick Collection, brings scholarly depth to the study of Vecchietta’s oeuvre, challenging conventional monographic formats and proposing a more nuanced art historical approach. The catalog includes 200 color illustrations, a detailed chronology, and new archival research, making it an essential reference for collectors, curators, and scholars of early Renaissance art.
